Bangladesh levels series, qualifies for ICC Champions Trophy 2017

Sarkar is batting hero after Mustafizur, Nasir star with the ball as South Africa is beaten by seven wickets

Bangladesh continued its giant-killing act of 2015, this time beating South Africa by seven wickets at the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium in Mirpur to level the three-match One-Day International series at 1-1 and secure qualification to the 2017 Champions Trophy.

Two nights after going down by eight wickets, Bangladesh hit back strongly through Mustafizur Rahman and Nasir Hossain, who picked up three wickets apiece, as South Africa was bowled out for 162 in 46 overs.

Soumya Sarkar then made an attractive unbeaten 88. His third-wicket stand of 135 with Mahmudullah, who made 50, helped seal a clinical win in just 27.4 overs.

South Africa got off to a disastrous start as Mustafizur, the left-arm seamer, struck first in the fifth over when he forced a leading edge from Quinton de Kock for Sabbir Rahman to take a simple catch at backward point.

Rubel Hossain, who returned to the starting line-up in place of Jubair Hossain, the legspinner, in Bangladesh’s only change from the opening match, made an instant impact by knocking out Hashim Amla’s offstump for 22.

South Africa’s slide continued as Nasir bowled Rilee Rossouw off his first ball. The slide turned into a panic attack when Mahmudullah sent back David Miller, who chipped a simple catch to Mashrafe Mortaza at short midwicket to leave South Africa wobbling at 74 for 4.

Bangladesh bowled with an intensity it had lacked in the previous match and the inclusion of Rubel, who had an excellent World Cup, made a notable difference.

South Africa's final score of 162, its lowest ODI total against Bangladesh, was made possible courtesy fighting knocks from Faf du Plessis (41) and Farhaan Behardien (36).

Behardien, who survived a leg-before decision, resisted Bangladesh and marshalled the lower order to squeeze South Africa past the 150-mark before he became the last man to be dismissed.

Kagiso Rabada, who picked up six wickets in a sensational spell that included a hat-trick on ODI debut two nights ago, was again the standout South African bowler, giving hope to his side when he took the wickets of Tamim Iqbal (5) and Litton Das (17) with the new ball in his opening spell.

But Sarkar defused the tension by scoring freely to take the surface out of the equation. He hit 13 fours and a six. His partnership with Mahmudullah, who played second fiddle during the course of a 100 plus stand, helped Bangladesh cruise to an emphatic win.

The third ODI will be played in Chittagong on Wednesday (July 15). Bangladesh has already won home series against Zimbabwe, Pakistan and India this year, but should it come through in the decider, it will mark perhaps its greatest limited-overs series triumph.
