Sir Don Bradman's blazer sells for $91,410

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A blazer worn by cricketer great Don Bradman during his first series as Australia captain sold at auction Monday for 100,000 Australian dollars ($70,000).
The green woollen blazer with gold piping and the Australian coat of arms on its breast pocket was worn by Bradman during the 1936-1937 test series against England.
Bidding opened at A$50,000 ($35,000) and there were two active bidders, one in the room and one on the phone. The blazer went to the bidder in the room who will pay a total of $132,000 ($91,000) when sales tax and the buyer's premium is added.
Auctioneer Max Williamson said "this is the first (Bradman) blazer we've had up for auction, which is possibly why it sold so well. It went beyond our expectations. We're still shaking.

Neymar, the slow burner

Neymar did not hit the ground running in his first two seasons at Barcelona and this term has proven no different. No sooner did he arrive at the Catalan club in the summer of 2013, than the former Santos star had to have tonsil surgery which subsequently caused anaemia and required him to be gradually eased into action.

Last year, the Brazil forward was sidelined by a challenge by Colombia defender Juan ZĂºĂ±iga during the World Cup, which fractured a vertebra in his spine and prevented him from finding his groove until mid-September.

This time round, a bout of the mumps kept Neymar out of the Spanish Super Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and Barça's La Liga opener. To add insult to injury, just when he seemed to have shaken off the infection, he suffered a knee problem that limited his involvement for Brazil against Costa Rica to a 10-minute cameo.

Neymar has only made one other appearance this season. That came in the last match before the international break, against MĂ¡laga on 29th August. The 23-year-old performed well, but tiredness took its toll after his long layoff and he was substituted by Luis Enrique late on.

While Leo Messi and Luis SuĂ¡rez can be expected to go into the big game against AtlĂ©tico firing on all cylinders, it remains to be seen what sort of condition Neymar will be in at the CalderĂ³n. That said, AtlĂ©tico are an opponent he loves facing, so he won't want to miss out.

Sharapova stands up for Nadal

Maria Sharapova has come out in support of Rafa Nadal following his defeat by Fabio Fognini, putting her own more positive spin on the stat about the Spaniard failing to win a Grand Slam title for the first time in a decade.

After the official US Open account tweeted that, "This is the first time in 10 years that #Rafa will NOT win a Grand Slam", Sharapova volleyed back a swift reply: "A much more appropriate headline would be he HAS won a grand slam EVERY year in past 10 (TEN!!) years. #respect?"

India beat Sri Lanka by 117 runs to win Test series 2-1

Home captain Angelo Mathews' batting heroics went in vain as India beat Sri Lanka by 117 runs in the final Test to win the three-match series 2-1 on Tuesday.

Having set Sri Lanka a 386-run victory target in the bowler-dominated contest, India needed seven wickets on the final day to gift Virat Kohli his first series victory since becoming the Test captain.

The men in blue win their first Test series on Sri Lankan soil after 22 years

Mathews (110) and debutant Kusal Perera (70), however, were in no mood to oblige and they refused to throw in the towel at the Sinhalese Sports Club.

The duo resisted India's victory push for 38 overs before wheels came off the Sri Lankan innings towards the end of the second session.

Perera succumbed to a rush of blood just before tea and Ishant Sharma, armed with the second new ball, dismissed Mathews in the first over after the break as the hosts eventually folded for 268.

"It's never easy to come back one-nil down in the series, playing away from home, and in Sri Lankan conditions," Kohli said at the presentation ceremony.

"The kind of attitude and the character the team has shown, I'm proud of the boys," he said after India recorded their first Test series win in Sri Lanka since 1993.

"It feels nice to have created a bit of history, especially with such a young team... It's a magnificent milestone for us to build on and gain confidence from," added Kohli.

Resuming on 67-3, Sri Lanka lost two wickets in the morning session before the 135-run stand between Mathews and Perera not only halted India's victory bid but also rekindled faint home hopes of a miraculous win.
Mathews brought up his seventh Test century in 217 balls, while Perera shone in his debut Test as well, complimenting his first innings half-century with an aggressive 70.

The stumper-batsman, however, threw away his wicket, reverse sweeping Ravichandran Ashwin (4-69) to Rohit Sharma at point.

Ishant (3-32) then ended all home hopes by trapping Mathews leg before for his 200th Test wicket.

"Our batting flopped again, to be honest," Mathews said as Sri Lanka made a poor start to life after Kumar Sangakkara.

"The bowlers did a really good job throughout the Test match. Out batters were not up to the mark."

Cheteshwar Pujara, who struck an unbeaten 145 in the makeshift opener's role for India, was adjudged man-of-the-match in the low-scoring contest, while Ashwin's 21 wickets earned him the man-of-the-series award.

Ian Bell retires from ODIs to focus on Tests

Ian Bell: England batsman retires from ODIs to focus on Tests

England batsman Ian Bell says he still has the "hunger and desire" to play Test cricket after retiring from one-day internationals.
Bell, 33, hinted he could quit Tests after winning the Ashes, but has since had "a really good talk" with the coaches and captain Alastair Cook.
"Deep down I probably knew I wasn't ready to call time on my Test career," Bell wrote in the Metro.
He is England's record ODI run-scorer,  with 5,416 runs in 161 matches.
However, the Warwickshire player was not selected in the two most recent England ODI or T20 squads.
Bell has played 115 Tests - only four Englishman have played more - scoring 7,569 runs at an average of 43 with 22 centuries.
He managed only 215 runs at an average of 26.87 in the 3-2 series win against Australia, a record-equalling fifth Ashes triumph for an Englishman.
"I've a huge amount still to give in the Test arena and still have so many ambitions left to achieve, both from a personal and a team perspective," he said.
"I would love nothing more than to go to Australia in two years' time and right the wrongs of our last Ashes tour there."

Pakistan Super league: Qatar to host Inaugural T20 competition

An inaugural Twenty20 Pakistan Super League will be held in Qatar next year.
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) says 40 foreign players from all test-playing countries, except India, have expressed an interest.
The tournament will take place from 4 to 24 February 2016 in Doha and will feature five teams playing for prize money of £64,350 ($1m).
It will take place in Qatar because of a lack of venues in Dubai, the home of Pakistan cricket since 2009.

The official Barça team photo

On Wednesday theBarcelonaplayers posed for the official squad photo of the 2015/16 season. The club's two summer signings,Aleix VidalandArda Turan, are nowhere to be seen because they cannot officially represent the 'Azulgranas' until January due to the FIFA ban.
Barça, whose new kit this season features horizontal stripes for the first time in the club's history, kicked off the campaign bidding for the sextuple. That dream went up in smoke because of the Spanish Super Cup loss to Athletic de Bilbao, but the team are still gunning to secure a fifth trophy in 2015 - the Club World Cup - and to repeat the La Liga and Champions League success of last season.

Barcelona to offer Neymar new five-year contract £182m

Barcelona to offer Neymar new five-year contract with a buyout clause of £182m

  • Barcelona want to discuss new contract with Neymar this year
  • Neymar's contract runs out in 2018 and Barca want to extend to 2021
  • Neymar's mandatory buyout clause will be set at staggering £182m
Barcelona will sit down with Neymar’s advisors before the end of the year to discuss a new five-year contract that will see his buyout clause increase to €250million (£182m) in line with Lionel Messi’s.
The discussions were planned at the end of last season by president Josep Bartomeu before he stood down for the club elections that he then won in July.

The player’s current deal runs until 2018 and the club want him to sign a new contract before the end of this season that will tie him down until 2021. His salary is officially set at €8.8m (£6.4m) net per season but Barcelona are still in court over the accusation that they structured his transfer from Santos in such a way as to top up his earnings while avoiding income tax.

The club paid a sum of €40m (£29.2m) to his parent’s company N&N as a penalty for signing him one year ahead of the pre-agreed date but are accused of using this as a form of disguised salary - €8m (£5.8m) for each of the five years of his first contract.

Barcelona have always planned to increase Neymar’s earnings in his third year at the club and they are likely to position him closer to Messi who earns €20m (£14.6m) net.
On the pitch the 23-year-old has been a phenomenal success scoring 39 goals last season in a Barca front three that, with Messi and Luis Suarez, scored 122 goals. The club won the Treble and Neymar also scored in the Champions League final.

A military code for Mario Balotelli

No smoking, no boozing, no wacky haircuts and no silly clothes... Balotelli handed list of hardline rules by AC Milan bosses

AUGUST 26, 2015 - MILAN
It 'was clear Sinisa Mihajlovic in the meeting on Friday in Florence: "Mario, you will need to toe the line." It 'was even clearer Adriano Galliani that track a year marked by a "military rigor." The CEO Rossoneri did enter into contract Mario Balotelli a code of conduct extra (ie in addition to the one already in place to regulate all licensed AC Milan). As reported by Corriere della Sera , La Stampa and Il Giornale and All Sport , Galliani was inspired by the code of conduct Air Force.

BARRACKS - We are talking, then, of a series of behavioral rules to the barracks. Mario Balotelli will have to follow, if he will not be punished with the payment of penalties. And if, but this is the most important fact, it will prove with facts, and not only with words, to be truly changed. But what's inside this code? There is a bit 'of everything, but there are three important points: the social, personal care and health.
SOCIAL - Rule number one: Balotelli will not damage the image of the club. It will be followed step by step on everything, even his life on social: will, therefore, be careful what you tweet and what public on Instagram and Facebook. It was absolutely forbidden to spread news concerning the company, attitudes which may harm the image of Milan.
THE LOOK - A chapter "sensitive" is dedicated to the care of his person and a more personal sphere. It will give a rule with extravagant hairstyles, down a peg and wear clothes in keeping with the style that a club like Milan was given for decades.
HEALTH - Last, but not least, is the issue of health: Balotelli has accepted a smoking ban, to overcome a certain blood alcohol level, attending discos and night clubs, and of course to show up on time for workouts. In short, to follow a healthy lifestyle. From athlete.
